While the hype train is building up the Thor & Captain America movies, it seems Marvel's other summer blockbuster has been under the radar. Considering the success of the 1st 3 films and the Wolvie spinoff, I'm sure the reboot will fare well. Fanboys, prepare for a nerdgasm. Here's a new trailer for X-Men: First Class

The 1 Sentence Movie Reviews
Between recently subscribing to Netflix, whose streaming movie catalog is dope, and going to the theater, I've been catching up on a lot of movies lately. So to keep it brief, I'll give you my ... 1 sentence reviews
Out Now:
Nightmare on Elm Street:
The horror franchise reboot's scariest moments don't come from the cheap scares or hack and slash violence, but rather the way it deals with the taboo and sensitive subject of pedophilia.

Iron Man 2:
After seeing this twice, I'm convinced that while mildly entertaining, it doesn't outdo the original and the novelty has almost all but worn off.

Date Night:
A surprisingly funny movie about a couple trying to break the monotony of married life which leads to a far fetched date that occasionally discusses the issues we've all encountered in our own relationships.

Netflix and On Demand:
The Blind Side:
A heartwarming re-imagining of Different Strokes applied to football, that Disney and Mrs. Garrett would be proud of.

The Wackness:
A cool coming of age story set to the tunes of mid 90's Hip-Hop that details a teen drug dealer's pursuit of a hot girl, who happens to be the step daughter of his newly befriended therapist/customer.

Sunshine Cleaning:
The once popular girl in high school realizes that in adulthood, her counterparts have become more successful, and decides to start a bizarre cleaning business to raise money for her son's tuition.

Julie and Julia:
An entertaining film that simultaneously tells the story of an aspiring writer turned blogger that dedicates herself to doing every recipe in her idol, Julia Child's 1st cook book, and Child's own rise to fame.

Pineapple Express Review
Funny. That's all; funny.
After seeing Knocked Up, I've become a fan of Seth Rogan. While the plot of Pineapple Express isn't going to change your life, it will surely entertain. Rogan, who plays Dale Denton, gets caught up in the middle of a drug war between rival suppliers after witnessing a murder. The entire film is based on Denton & friends trying to avoid the vengeful wrath of drug dealers who have tracked them down because of their smoking habit. The over the top, and oftentimes homosexual, humor stems from dialogue between characters. This movie is filled with priceless one liners. I won't ruin it any further by giving away anymore plot details, but just know its hilarious and worth seeing.

My Opinion on The Dark Knight
First and foremost, it was a great film. Great in the sense that it was enjoyable. Being that I saw it so late, I heard many rave reviews from people that saw it opening weekend. I heard things like, "Its the best comic book adaption ever", "The writing was excellent", and "Its sets the new standard by which all comic books movies must follow". After being told things like that, I couldn't help but be excited. However....yes, however, after seeing it, I don't feel like it lived up to the hype.
Was it good, yes. Maybe even great, but is it truly leap years ahead of Iron Man per se? NO! Again, this is just my opinion. By all means I thought it was dope, and without doubt, Heath Ledger was chilling as the Joker. It simply felt like a sequel to an already well written comic book film. You have to understand, I thought the 1st installment did wonders in terms of character development and maintaining the authenticity of the source material, while still delivering a great film. In my opinion, it did a better job than all the previous super hero movies that came before it. This one did exactly the same, and the actors seemed more comfortable in their roles. The addition of Ledger to the cast enhanced the overall mood, and his performance was truly exceptional.
I guess the questions remain; Am I knocking the film based on false expectations? or Is it truly the epic sequel that does the 1st justice? To both, a resounding yes. I know it may sound like I'm contradicting myself, but I'm not. Its dope and well worth your money, but not life altering. While the movie succeeds in many ways, it doesn't transcend its genre and catapult itself into Oscar nom territory. Just be warned, its on the long side. Well the 1st was too, but it does what its supposed to very well.

Its a MARVEL-ous Summer
So I finally saw the Incredible Hulk last night. I can't help but think that these super hero movies are getting progressively better because of a conscious effort to focus on the narrative as opposed to the special effects. When these flicks debuted back in like '99, I thought they were all pretty cheesy, and were simple showcases for how great CG had gotten. Fast forward to the summer of super heroes (Iron Man, Hulk, Batman, Hellboy ,and we can't forget Mr. Smith's Hancock), and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't impressed.
Robert Downey Jr's performance of Tony Starks was incredible, and quite possibly the best we've seen in a Marvel adapted film. As for the Hulk, I thought it was especially dope how they paid homage to both the comic and the 80's Lou Ferrigno series. Granted there were moments of so-so CG, but the single defining moment for me, was the scene with Betty and Hulk sitting in the rain. As the shot was framed to only show Hulk's bicep and pec, which dwarfed Liv Tyler as Betty, I thought "DAMN that looks real." Aside from the visual tech candy, the movie was good. Maybe not AS good as Iron Man, but good nonetheless. Its definitely a huge step in the right direction, and without spoiling the ending, the Marvel film universe is looking quite promising. CO-SIGNED!
