The Birthday Shout Out

So I'd like to thank everyone that took a moment to simply wish me a Happy Birthday. We're far removed from the times when our phones would be ringing off the jack with b-day wishes, let alone actually remembering people's phone numbers by heart.

In spite of it all, technology conveniently reminds us through social networking like Facebook to say it. I love getting the huge influx of messages from people I haven't seen or spoken to in ages. Its a simple reminder that whether we play prominent roles in their lives today or not, as some point we did.

Literally at the stroke of midnight, I got a text from one of my close homies, wishing me a happy b-day. I then got a really sweet voice message sent via BBM that wished me a good one. I woke up to a voicemail from a friend, whom I should, but don't speak to frequently, that sung me Happy Birthday. My boy called me from work, and so on and so on. Even in the eleventh hour, I was still getting messages and texts.

I mention all of this to say, I truly appreciate that moment in time, regardless of our relationship, that people take to either call, text, email, or BBM birthday wishes. The simple acknowledgement is meaningful and makes me feel significant. It may not mean much to many, but its a reminder that we've impacted each other's lives in some way, shape, or form. I have close to 500 "so-called" friends on FB, but I actually know about 475 of them personally. Granted our relationships vary widely from person to person, but I appreciate the minute it takes for an acquaintance to say hi as much as the close friend. It's the thoughtfulness that counts.

I had a lifelong friend, whom I don't speak to nearly as much as I should, text me at 6 PM and apologize for not sending birthday greetings earlier. It made me smile b/c I thought, its never too if you remember. So to all of y'all, thank you.

If you keep up with my ramblings, you know this year has been tough for me. Really tough, and little things like b-day shouts make my days easier. So to my roommate/bestie, Val, thanks for taking me out. To Sir Dubs, thanks for joining us... And to everyone else, I'm grateful.
